Blackburn Rovers have launched a multi-million-pound refurbishment of Ewood Park’s roof that will run through the 2026/27 season. The club confirmed the seven-figure project on Friday, just weeks after installing a new pitch following last season’s issues.

What’s happening at Ewood Park?

The club’s Chief Executive Steve Curwood called the roof work “another major milestone” in their long-term investment plan. “This is a seven-figure investment and reflects our determination to protect and enhance Ewood Park for generations,” he said. The project targets roughly 6,000m of steelwork that forms the stadium roof’s structural framework. Curwood added that every phase is planned around matchdays to keep disruption minimal.

Mountain Earth, the appointed contractor, will carry out the refurbishment. Their Managing Director Sam Heyes said: “Ewood Park is an iconic ground with a proud history, so we’re pleased to have been trusted with this important refurbishment work.” The firm has a track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects while stadiums stay fully operational.

Why the pitch matters too

Blackburn Rovers also replaced the playing surface this summer after last season’s problems. The stitching process is now under way and should finish by the end of the week. Max, Project Manager from SIS pitches, explained how the synthetic fibre system works. “The machines run off a laser and are 1.5m wide. They inject pins 18cm deep and the natural roots wrap around the synthetic fibre,” he said. The fibre makes up five per cent of the pitch once complete, reinforcing the surface without turning it into plastic.

Max added that the system improves durability and stability in harsh weather. “It’s worldwide; a lot of clubs have it. It helps with maintenance, playability and durability,” he said. The installation is expected to wrap up on Sunday after a six-day run.

What comes next for Rovers?

With the 2026/27 season approaching, the club insists both projects will be delivered without major disruption. Curwood said the roof work and pitch upgrade are part of a broader push to raise standards for players, staff and supporters. The club finished 20th in the Championship last season with 52 points from 46 games and a recent run of LWDLD. Their goal difference stood at minus 14 after scoring 42 and conceding 56.

League standing (final 2025 table - new season not yet under way): 20th in Championship, 52 pts, 13W-13D-20L from 46 games, recent form LWDLD.
