Blackburn Rovers have submitted plans to expand their academy training ground in Brockhall Village with a new 500-capacity covered spectator stand and LED floodlights. The development aims to meet updated Elite Player Performance Plan criteria and maintain the club’s prestigious Category One Academy status, held for 14 years. The club finished 20th in the Championship last season with 52 points (13W-13D-20L), scoring 42 goals and conceding 56 (-14 goal difference), 43 points behind leaders Coventry.
What are the proposed upgrades?
The plans include a covered viewing structure for around 500 spectators, positioned on the halfway line of the existing show pitch. The stand will feature eight linked units with seated and standing areas. Four new LED floodlights, mounted on 16-metre columns, will also be installed. Blackburn Rovers say the lighting assessment shows no spill into neighbouring homes.
Why is this important for the academy?
The club describes Category One status as vital for youth development and long-term success. The academy has produced several local graduates and is an essential revenue source. While average attendances for the 2025/26 season were 161, the new stand ensures compliance with governing body requirements and improves supporter amenities.
How will the club manage local concerns?
Blackburn Rovers are mindful of the residential area and have worked with local residents and the parish council on previous projects. Parking will remain unchanged, with the existing 90-space car park serving the site. For high-profile fixtures, additional parking and a park-and-ride service will be available at the senior training centre.
The academy has operated at Brockhall for decades, hosting youth team training and matches throughout the season. The club’s recent form (LWDLD) highlights the importance of investing in future talent.
