Tony Mowbray says Blackburn Rovers' owners have promised funds for January signings as the club looks to improve on its current league position. The head coach revealed he received a pledge of financial support from the Venky's group after a recent conversation with co-owner Balaji Rao.
"There was a promise of help and through my conversation with him there, I think financial help was there," Mowbray said. The commitment is aimed at addressing a squad that sits 16th in the Championship with nine points from eight games, having scored and conceded 12 goals. Their recent form shows one win, two draws and two losses from the last five matches.
Mowbray hopes this backing will allow the club to act decisively when the transfer window opens, avoiding the slow recruitment that has hampered them in recent January periods. He estimated that the kind of additions they missed in the summer could have required an outlay in the region of three to five million pounds. "If we’d made four more signings in the window, it might have cost three, four, five million," he noted.
The manager's immediate focus remains on the pitch, where the team showed its potential in a 3-1 victory over Millwall earlier this month. He thanked supporters for their backing during that win, which featured goals from Oladapo Afolayan and Andri Guðjohnsen. Mowbray declined to comment on specific fan frustrations directed at the ownership, stating he is not a politician.
With the next challenge a home fixture against Cardiff City on 10 October, the club will look to build momentum. Fans can check the full upcoming schedule on our fixtures page. The promised January funds are intended to provide a platform for a push towards the top eight, a target Mowbray has openly expressed.
